“Gibt es ein Leben nach der Wiedervereinigung?” - Wolfgang Neuss (1923-1989)
Schön war die Zeit, als die Welt noch in Ordnung war -
West-Berlin in pictures #70: “Is there any life after reunification?” Controversial cabaret artist Wolfgang Neuss (1923-1989), photo taken by his girlfriend Gisela Groenewald, late 1960s. Neuss lost his finger by shooting himself in the left hand to get out of World War II. Besides his unforgettable satire he became famous for whistle-blowing the murderer of German TV crime series “Stahlnetz”. Later he supported student activists and the anti-war movement. His TV talk show appearance discussing with former West-Germany’s Federal president Richard von Weizsacker then mayor of Berlin in 1983 is as legendary as his legacy for being a legalize-marijuana-supporters’ icon: Neuss was claiming that never ever again a joint was allowed to be extinguish on German ground. He died from cancer in 1989 - just few months before the Berlin Wall came down.
